Sunrise, March 3, 2014 - a few minutes after peak

Day 3 … 15.3 mile ride. Absolutely glorious sunrise! I altered my regular route just to see it.

Day 4 … might have to be an indoor workout due to rain.

The 2014 Napa Valley Tour de Cure will be here before we know it! I am now just over halfway to my fundraising goal. If you would like to donate to this great cause please click here.

March Madness 2014, Day 2

Sunday, March 2nd, 2014

I logged only 20.5 March Madness miles this morning. I’ve got lots and lots to day, so there was only time for a short ride. It’s cloudy and breezy out there today, but the air feels clean and delightful! There were a few sprinkles on my ride, but I kind of liked it and it gave me a good excuse to wear my new purple rain jacket.

I’m thinking a pot of Pork & Tomatillo Stew might be in order today. I haven’t made this in a long time and this is perfect weather for it. I’m thinking of ways to lighten it up a bit – it calls for pork shoulder, which has lots of fat. I may try a different cut of pork, something much leaner, or even chicken. Hmm …

Well, I’ve got lots and lots to do today, so I’d better get moving.

Have a great day! I hope you get some cycling in.

And So March Madness Begins

Saturday, March 1st, 2014

With 15.2 miles, it’s not a very impressive start to my 2014 March Madness, but it is a start. I have so much to do today and the weather is unpredictable, so it had to be a short ride. I got sprinkled on a little (I enjoyed that more than my bike did, I am sure) and it wasn’t too breezy or chilly. I got to try out my new purple rain jacket and I LOVE it.

For information on the Davis Bike Club’s March Madness, click here. It’s a great cause – proceeds go to purchasing helmets for school-aged children.

Happy March Madness, everyone! May you meet your mileage goals!

Setting a mileage goal for March is also a terrific way to prepare for another great cause – my 2014 Napa Valley Tour de Cure!

First Prework Ride of the Season!

Thursday, February 20th, 2014

First pre-work ride of 2014 season

I logged only 12 miles this morning, but this was an important milestone for the training year – the first pre-work ride of the season!

It started out a little chilly, but I quickly warmed up. A beautiful bank of clouds to the East created a lovely sunrise. This is such a beautiful start to any day … I wish I could start every day like this.

It was just as beautiful at lunchtime, though a little breezier … I enjoyed a nice walk on the Arboretum.

I would have to say that today was an exceptionally beautiful and good day!

This will be my 6th Napa Valley Tour de Cure – if you would like to donate to my ride, please click here. I am far from reaching my goal this year, so please consider making a donation. It’s a great cause and every bit helps!

Be safe and enjoy!

Glorious Day for a Ride!

Sunday, February 16th, 2014

I rode with my friend Kat this morning. We had a nice dinner and some wine last night, so it was extra important to ride today! The dinner was pretty healthy – smoked chicken apple sausages cooked with shiitake mushrooms and greens served over a blend of short grain brown & “Forbidden” rices. We had the wholesome whole grain, veggies, and lean protein. A little cheese (low fat) and crackers while dinner was cooking, but all in all, not too bad.

We rode from Davis to Winters and then explored a little on Pleasants Valley Road before we had to head back. It was just over 50 miles total. It is absolutely gorgeous out there today. A sneaky little breeze … you can’t really see it in the trees or fields, but we sure could feel it.

A neighbor's dogwood tree is in full bloom. It's looking like Spring out there already!

We desperately need more rain, but it sure was nice to ride in beautiful weather today. Here’s hoping for another nice day tomorrow, then it can start raining Tuesday. That’s fair, right?

Oh, the highlight of my ride today … I passed one of the DBC Race Team dudes.

OK, so it was at a traffic light and it changed right before I got there, but, I rarely have the opportunity to pass the “real” cyclists, so it’s always a little fun when I get to. Sometimes it really is nice to be so easily amused.

I do hope to get lots of training rides in over the next few months because the 2014 Napa Valley Tour de Cure will be here before you know it!

A Lost Weekend

Monday, October 21st, 2013

Life can be so cruel sometimes … like when you’re sick on a perfect-weather weekend. I rode nary a mile this weekend, and barely made it to the gym at all this entire week. And if ever a Fall weekend was perfect for cycling, this was it. I even had to take a very, very rare sick day this week, and had to back out of volunteering to help with morning snacks for the Davis Bike Club’s Foxy’s Fall Century. A group of friends were having a special foodie event – I had to miss that, too! I did make my work event on Saturday, though – UC Davis Preview Day!

Matcha Smoothie

So, it turned out to be a pretty low key weekend, with some much needed rest at home watching reruns on the Food and Cooking channels, and hanging out with a warm cat on the couch.

This morning’s smoothie was very light and interesting with a matcha green tea whey protein powder. I whirled this in my Vitamix with about a half cup of water, 1/4 cup steel cut oats, a big handful of baby kale greens, a handful of frozen red grapes, about a half cup of frozen pineapple, and six ice cubes. This made a lovely green smoothie, and was delicate and lightly sweet.

I’ve finally got an appetite again, and tonight am preparing a Maple Mustard Herb Marinated Pork Tenderloin, with Roasted Herbed Potatoes, and Maple & Balsamic Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Apple.

Brussels Sprouts & Apple - ready to roast!

Maple Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Apple*

2 pounds Brussels Sprouts
1 large Gala Apple
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 teaspoons kosher salt
freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons real maple syrup
3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

Preheat oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Rinse and trim the Brussels Sprouts. Peel, core, and cut the apple into 8 wedges. Toss with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Roast about 20 minutes, to your desired tenderness. You’ll want to check them after about 10 minutes and give them a stir. This will help them to cook evenly. You can also cook these in a cast iron skillet.

While the sprouts are cooking, combine the maple syrup and vinegar. Bring to a boil and cook gently until reduced to a thick syrup. Watch carefully – it can go from perfect to too sticky in a moment.

Be careful to not overcook the sprouts. You can get a nice char, but don’t cook them until they’re soft. They’ll be bitter and nasty.

* inspired by this Weight Watchers recipe.

Purple, Gold, & Red Potatoes with Thyme & Rosemary

Herb Roasted Potatoes

1 pound waxy potatoes
Olive oil
Fresh herbs of your choice
Salt & pepper to taste

Half the potatoes, toss with the olive oil, herbs, salt and pepper. Place in a roasting pan. Roast until perfect.

If you’re pressed for time, you can par-cook the potatoes for about 7-10 minutes in the microwave. Cook them about halfway, then prepare and roast as above.

Maple-Mustard-Herb Roasted Pork Tenderloin

Pork tenderloin, about 1-1/2 pounds
about 1/4 cup fresh chopped herbs of your choice (I used thyme, rosemary, sage, and parsley)
1 heaping tablespoon coarse Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons real maple syrup
2 tablespoons champagne vinegar
1/2 teaspoon salt

Maple Mustard Herb Roasted Pork Tenderloin

Place tenderloin in a zip-top bag. Whisk herbs, mustard, maple syrup, vinegar, and salt together, then pour into the bag with the pork. Seal bag and give it a little shake to evenly distribute the marinade. Refrigerate for at at least 4 hours or overnight.

Roast or grill the tenderloin to an internal temperature of 155 degrees Fahrenheit.

I liked each dish individually, but all together on one plate the meal needed color. Hmm …

Let The Training Begin!

Saturday, September 7th, 2013

This morning’s ride was just shy of 65 miles – a nice loop from Davis to Winters and back. It was a comfortable pace, just a little push here and there (for me, anyway), but comfortable enough for some conversation. The conversation turned to a few Davis Bike Club organized rides, such as the DBC Double Century. When the panic and fear was evident in my “Double Century … umm …” I was assured that it’s in May, so we’ll have lots of time to train for it. And, I was assured, we can always practice with a 200K Brevet. So, I’ve done a regular century … what’s another about 25 or so miles, right? And, the brevet will help me to train for the 2014 Napa Valley Tour de Cure in May, right?

For now, I think I’ll do a little online reading about these rides and enjoy a recovery snack.

Pineapple Banana Protein Smoothie

Pineapple Banana Protein Smoothie

1 cup non fat milk
2 scoops whey protein powder
1 ripe banana
1/2 to 3/4 cup frozen pineapple
6-8 ice cubes

Pour the milk into your blender, then add the protein powder, ripe banana, and frozen pineapple. Blend briefly to combine. Add the ice cubes, 2-3 at a time and blend until you reach your desired consistency. For a thinner smoothie, either omit the ice or use less.

Makes enough for two about 12-ounce smoothies.

March Madness, Day 24

Monday, March 25th, 2013

Today 85.5 miles. I am now at 60% of my goal of 750 miles for March Madness. I highly doubt that I will be able to ride 300 miles this week when I will be working every day, including Saturday, leaving only next Sunday 3/31. Oh, well.

Hiking the Training Hill in Auburn, CA

Saturday it was too windy in Davis for me to ride. I probably should have just driven to the Napa Valley to ride the Tour de Cure route (or part of it at least!), but I went to Auburn and hiked with a friend. I haven’t seen her in a long time and it was a nice change of pace. I do need to do more cross training.

Today I rode from Davis to Winters to Vacaville to Pena Adobe Park and back to Winters and Davis. I hate to admit, but I could not get all the way up Cantelow today, either. I rode stronger up most of it today than I did last week, but I stopped at about the same place as last week. This concerns me. The Tour de Cure is just 6 short weeks away and I had to walk up that last little bit of Cantelow. I don’t understand it. I feel like I am riding stronger on the flats and rolling hills, but why can’t I climb a hill I’ve climbed dozens of times before? Am I really losing my ability to climb, or am I just not used to the “compact” and different gearing on my new bike?

It was a beautiful day for riding, lots of sunshine and not too much of a breeze. I saw a few familiar faces out there on the road.

On my way out, stopping for a quick water break in Winters. Thank you, Steady Eddy's in Winters for having a clean restroom, some shaded tables, and nice cool water for cyclists!

Feeling completely & utterly defeated at the top of Cantelow.

43.7 miles ... a quick water and snack break at Pena Adobe.

About 57 miles ... Lake Solano Park.

I am hoping to ride evenings after work this week … that will add a few miles to my March Madness and a little more Tour de Cure training.
