Davis Farmers’ Market!

June 12th, 2012

Saturday morning was far too windy to ride, so I headed off to the local Farmers’ Market. I met up with a girlfriend and we perused, shopped, chatted with vendors, had coffee, and sampled. My favorite sample of the day was the Meyer lemon jelly at the  Glashoff Farms’ table. Tart. Sweet. Lemony. This jelly would make a perfect glaze for a fresh fruit tart, or brushed onto cake layers before finishing. I bought the big jar. Check out their website:  http://suisunberry.com/index.htm

We tried the pour over coffee. I thought it was too weak; my friend thought it was too strong. It was a Goldilocks moment. To be fair, I am mostly an espresso drinker, so very few regular coffees will be strong enough for me.

I learned that Davis has its very own currency, “Davis dollars.”

How it works is that you buy the “Davis Dollars” and they can only be used in Davis. The thought is that it will encourage local spending and build a sense of community. For more information, check it out:  http://davisdollars.org/

Time to get back to business … so many incredible, beautiful produce finds at the Davis Farmers’ Market!

Assorted Vegetables

Fresh, sweet, juicy peaches

Royal Anne Cherries

Sweet red cherries

Berries!

Sweet, fragrant strawberries

Succulent blackberries

Flowers

We went to Crepeville for breakfast (http://www.crepeville.com/). My friends each got a Benedict-type dish, and I got fresh fruit and a side of potatoes. As always, it was wonderful. I don’t go out for breakfast very often, but I do enjoy Crepeville’s breakfasts.

The "side" of potatoes ... $2.95 and enough to feed a family of four!

Fresh fruit, cut to order, $4.95 and completely worth it!

I’ll do my best to get the Magpie Cafe dinner post up tomorrow. Here’s a sneak preview …

Beautiful Monday Morning

June 11th, 2012

Hey! The wind finally calmed down and now I have to go back to work … life can be so cruel sometimes. At least I got a nice ride in this morning. It is gorgeous out there! What are you waiting for? Go get on your bike!

I foresee the possibility of another ride after work.

Great Day to Play Hookie …

June 8th, 2012

Oh, if only I could do it! Alas, I won’t… off to work after a quick jaunt on this glorious morning.

Good Morning!

June 7th, 2012

I just got back from my pre-work morning ride. It is so beautiful outside! Nice temperature, glorious blue skies, hardly a breeze … an absolutely stunning morning. I’m hoping for the same this weekend when I can take some time to ride!

Stunning Sky This Morning

June 5th, 2012

We’ve enjoyed lovely skies lately in Davis. Last night’s sunset was spectacular, leaving me longing to go to the coast and watch the sunset into the ocean while soaking in a hot tub with a refreshing beverage.

A Visit with Mom

June 4th, 2012

The proud gardener showing off her garden.

I had a lovely visit with Mom yesterday. We had a nice chat.  She proudly showed me her garden.  We visited with my brother-in-law to snip some fresh herbs and lettuce from his garden. We went for a walk around the park. We had a nice dinner and Mom even let me use her grill. This is a big deal, and a big honor, you see, because Mom is of the school of thought that women do not grill. She firmly believes that grilling is a man’s duty. Well, it was a girl’s only night, so be default I got to grill.

Our walk …

We couldn't quite shake that feeling that we were being watched ...

Sometimes it's important to stop and smell the flowers.

Not sure what this was, but I liked the light reflections.

Hmm ... still feeling like we're being watched ...

Our menu …

We started with freshly cut artichokes from Mom's garden.

Then a nice, light salad with some garden fresh lettuce.

Farm fresh lightly steamed corn on the cob.

Grilled boneless, skinless chicken breast marinated in olive oil, Meyer lemon, and lemon balm.

We marinated the chicken breasts for about an hour with a Meyer lemon, some olive oil, and fresh lemon balm. I started grilling it on high, turned it once to get the grill marks, then turned the temperature down to medium-low. I cooked it to 170 (a little high for me, but this is what Mom likes).

Dessert

Mom had promised her special apple cake for my visit, but didn’t have time to make it, so for dessert we had Spumoni and a homemade mincemeat cookie.
