Southern California … San Diego

Saturday, March 29th, 2014

My trip included San Diego and Holtville, two distinctly different places.

Being a tourist - taking photos from the airport shuttle.

The weather looked promising when I first arrived in San Diego, but it clouded up pretty quickly. It was much cooler than I had anticipated and I found myself wishing that I had packed a UC Davis sweatshirt. Thankfully, I at least brought a jacket.

I arrived one day ahead of the rest of my group. I was hoping to meet up with a friend and ride in San Diego, but my friend was sick and the weather was not great for cycling anyway, so I hung around the hotel and worked. Our group stayed at the Town & Country Resort & Conference Center. I wandered around the property, which has a very confusing layout, but it was interesting and had lots of character.

There were roses of just about every color.

Mustardy Gold

Pink & White

Peach

There were also lavender, white, different shades of red, pink, peach, purple, a wonderful collection of roses. Some of the blooms were huge. Sadly, my feeble little travel camera just did not capture the rich palette of hues.

My favorite part of the property was the variety of decorative plants and flowers.

Pots of flowers ...

... everywhere you looked ...

... bright and cheery.

Lush greenery

Hens & chicks?

Soothing fountains

After I got checked in and wandered around a little to stretch my legs from the flight, I logged on to the Internet for a bit of work. Then I treated myself to a spa pedicure. I should do this more often – that felt amazing.

Back to the room to work a bit more, then wander around to find some dinner. Every staff member I asked said that I had to try their “fancy” restaurant, Trellises Garden Grille. It was good, but apparently I have a different view of “fancy.” Details. “Fancy” restaurants pay attention to details.

Skirt Steak Salad

Malbec

“Fancy” restaurants pay attention to details like putting the dressing on the side when requested. I am not a huge dressing fan, so I always ask for it on the side. My salad came slathered with dressing, but I just did not want to hassle with sending it back. I know if I had, they would have corrected it and I am confident that my server would have been quite pleasant about it, but I just did not want to deal with it at the time. Overall the salad was good – the greens were fresh, the meat was well seasoned and cooked to my liking (on the rare side). The dressing was good, but there was just way too much of it for my tastes. If you like lots of dressing, you would love this salad.

“Fancy” restaurants would notice that splash of wine on the bottom of the glass and wipe it off before serving it. I promise these will be the only negative observations I will share about the food on this trip. It’s just that these are pet peeves for me.

After a leisurely dinner, I wandered around the property a little more. It was quite pleasant and I wish my little camera had been able to capture the lighting; it was lovely.

In the morning I worked out in the gym facility. I was so thankful to have this so that I could log a few March Madness miles. After a nice workout, I cleaned up and went to the Terrace Cafe and Deli for a healthy breakfast – oatmeal, fresh fruit, and a spot of coffee. The fruit was delightful and the service was efficient and friendly.

Back to my room for a few more hours of work.

On the shuttle ride from the hotel, I struck up a conversation with a woman who was also traveling from Northern California. I overheard her tell the shuttle driver that she was “here with the University,” so naturally I assumed she meant my University – UC Davis. So we chatted. It turns out that she is faculty at National University, not UC Davis. She gave me a few suggestions of things to try to do in San Diego. She recommended checking out the Fashion Valley Mall, located just over “the river” from my hotel.

Around lunchtime, I ventured out to explore the mall. Wow. It really was a beautiful mall. We don’t have a mall in Davis – you have to travel to Sacramento, Roseville, Fairfield, or one of the other neighboring cities for a mall. We have some decent malls within a reasonable driving distance, but it’s been a long time since I have been to a “fancy” mall like this. Wow!

I indulged in a little retail therapy and wandered in and out of a few shops. I will tell you all about my foodie exploration at True Food Kitchen. This was hands down the best meal I had on my trip. It deserves a post all of its own.

So, after a leisurely lunch, I wandered back to the hotel to get a little more work done and to prepare for our evening event.

We had a terrific event. It was exciting to meet prospective students and their families. We met some incredible students and look forward to seeing them in Fall 2014!

After the event, I went out for dinner with two of my colleagues to A Taste of Thai in San Diego.

Grilled Salmon Salad

Pad Thai

These pictures do not even begin to do this food justice. It was wonderful!

Breakfast

Wednesday morning I worked out again and then had breakfast with one of my colleagues.

I had seen a Boudin Bakery at the mall, so I had my heart set on breakfast at Boudin. Around 8am, we walked over to find that Boudin didn’t open until 9am! What?! A bakery with bankers hours?

So, off to Starbucks we went. I got the Greek Yogurt with Honey Parfait and a banana. This would make a great mid-ride snack.

The weather was off and on cloudy, cool, breezy. It threatened rain, but didn’t until after we were on the road to our next destination.

Storm's a blowing in!

Ominous dark clouds!!

Finally - sun as we leave.

And so begins the next leg of our journey – to Holtville, California.

Way Cool Moon Over Davis

Should be full by tomorrow night!

March Madness, Days 8 & 9

Monday, March 10th, 2014

Day 8 … 81 miles – Davis, Winters, Vacaville, Winters, Davis.

Day 9 … 21.1 miles – an easy loop from Davis to Woodland and back.

Saturday, March 8th

I rode pretty hard, enjoying the rollers between Winters and Vacaville on Pleasants Valley Road. I really need to build up to hills again, so this is great practice. I love cycling Pleasants Valley Road – it’s beautiful, rolling hills, and usually it’s pretty well protected from wind when it gets very breezy. Yesterday the weather was perfect for cycling – not too cool, not too warm, not too breezy, not too sunny, not too cloudy. It was just about perfect.

I had a couple of quick rest stops at Steady Eddy’s in Winters. My first stop was just for water and a couple of Sports Beans, then I headed back out on Putah Creek Road with the intent of doing just my Lake Solano loop, but I was feeling so good when I got to turn, that I headed out Pleasants Valley towards Vacaville. Traffic was light (always nice when you’re cycling!) and there were quite a few other cyclists out (also very nice when you’re cycling) enjoying the day. I road out to Vaca Valley Road, then turned around to head back. I hadn’t really planned on this long of a ride and got kind of a late start in the morning, so I didn’t want to risk not getting back at a decent time. I was focused on cycling, so I didn’t stop to take any photos, but it was glorious out there!

Oat Cake - this will get you through a few miles

On my way back through Winters, I stopped again at Steady Eddy’s for a snack. I am quite happy to report that they do still have oat cakes. I filled up on water, half the oat cake, and headed back out. I chatted briefly with a group who was also headed back towards Davis. They were from Davis and Sacramento. I took off a few moments before they did, but they caught up quickly and then invited to to join them. They pulled me all the way down Putah Creek Road. It was nice! It was work to keep up, but it was worth it. I’m not sure what the correct cycling lingo is, but they were steady riders and rode in a straight line, not wambling all over the place, so I felt safe trying to draft off them.

By the time I got home, I had hit 75 miles. I needed some more water and was hungry again, so I filled up with water at home and snacked on the rest of my oat cake. I wanted to do a few more miles and my legs were feeling a bit tight, so I did a little loop just to spin and loosen up my legs. My total for the day was 81 miles. I made some good progress on my March Madness and training for my 2014 Napa Valley Tour de Cure. I felt good about that.

I was pretty hungry last night, and must confess to having a total “guy” dinner.

Steak and baked potato.

Steak

Potato

Of course, my steak was a lean cut and my potato had a little light Havarti cheese & fat free Greek yogurt, so it was really not too bad. Lots of protein and that’s what I needed. My eyes were bigger than my stomach, though. I had about half the potato and about 2/3 of the steak. I was going to have salad, but I was too full.

Sunday, March 9th

This morning a gentle recovery ride was in order. It was a beautiful morning for cycling – the air was deliciously clean and cool, very little breeze, with a nice cloud cover. I headed out towards Woodland, Road 102 to Road 25, then looped back Road 103, and back towards Davis.

Looking towards Sacramento

Looking towards Winters

I have spent the rest of the day …

Hanging with Tiger

Admiring my lavender.

Smelling the roses.

Checking other blooms

... and more blooms ...

Checking for a 4-leaf clover

Making a few new friends …

Luck be a lady tonight!

These ladies were very active ...

... exploring ...

... trying to hide ...

Camera shy?

Very happy for these visitors.

Oh, yeah, and a bunch of chores in there, too, not just play. I should probably get back to a few of those things that really need to get done today.

The rains are supposed to start again tomorrow, so I’ll pack up for the gym in the morning just in case. But if it’s nice … I’ll be … oh wait … time change … sunrise at 7:26 am? I’ll be at the gym in the morning, but maybe I’ll get to ride tomorrow after work!

Good Cycling Weekend

Monday, February 24th, 2014

This weekend was more “cycling” and less “foodie” and very much needed. Aaaah … that felt good. I got about 65 miles yesterday and 56 today. Yesterday I rode with my friend Kat, today was solo. The routes were similar: Davis and Winters, with a little offshoot towards Vacaville on Pleasants Valley Road on Saturday, and a Lake Solano Loop today.

Saturday we rode from Davis to Winters, with a water refresh and snack stop at Steady Eddy’s.

Yogurt & Fruit

Granola Garnish

Sports Beans Belly Flops

Then we headed back out Putah Creek Road, turning left on Pleasants Valley Road and rode out to the bottom of Cantelow Road.

Thinking about Cantelow ...

My bike ... posing.

Next time, but not today.

First return trip to Cantelow will almost certainly be from the other side, not the steep side.

We headed back towards Winters and stopped a couple of times for photos.

For years I have ridden past this horse and never stopped. She was disappointed that I offered her no food, but she was quite friendly nonetheless.

Lake Solano

Lake Solano Dam

My Colnago, striking another pose today.

Sweet, fragrant almond blossoms. Look at that blue sky!

This is such a beautiful time of year, although Spring weather is much too early (again) this year. We really do need rain, but I am so grateful for a weekend like this to get a few training rides in. We are supposed to have rain next Thursday through Sunday, so I wanted to take advantage of this incredible cycling weather this weekend. I have to ride as much as possible in the next few months to get ready for my 2014 Napa Valley Tour de Cure

This is why I ride. Won't you join me?

Join me – this is an awesome ride for a great cause. Together we can make a difference!

Sunrise … Sunset

Friday, February 21st, 2014

Today was a busy, busy day! Thankfully I got to start out with an invigorating sunrise ride …

Sunrise

Sunset

… a super productive day at work … then time for a relaxing sunset walk.

Now it’s time for a light healthy dinner, a few chores, a little TV with Tiger (he especially likes to watch the foodie channels), and some Sudoku.

Here’s wishing you a wonderful evening!

First Prework Ride of the Season!

Thursday, February 20th, 2014

First pre-work ride of 2014 season

I logged only 12 miles this morning, but this was an important milestone for the training year – the first pre-work ride of the season!

It started out a little chilly, but I quickly warmed up. A beautiful bank of clouds to the East created a lovely sunrise. This is such a beautiful start to any day … I wish I could start every day like this.

It was just as beautiful at lunchtime, though a little breezier … I enjoyed a nice walk on the Arboretum.

I would have to say that today was an exceptionally beautiful and good day!

This will be my 6th Napa Valley Tour de Cure – if you would like to donate to my ride, please click here. I am far from reaching my goal this year, so please consider making a donation. It’s a great cause and every bit helps!

Be safe and enjoy!

Happy Mon… Tuesday!

Here's wishing you a beautiful day!

Glorious Day for a Ride!

Sunday, February 16th, 2014

I rode with my friend Kat this morning. We had a nice dinner and some wine last night, so it was extra important to ride today! The dinner was pretty healthy – smoked chicken apple sausages cooked with shiitake mushrooms and greens served over a blend of short grain brown & “Forbidden” rices. We had the wholesome whole grain, veggies, and lean protein. A little cheese (low fat) and crackers while dinner was cooking, but all in all, not too bad.

We rode from Davis to Winters and then explored a little on Pleasants Valley Road before we had to head back. It was just over 50 miles total. It is absolutely gorgeous out there today. A sneaky little breeze … you can’t really see it in the trees or fields, but we sure could feel it.

A neighbor's dogwood tree is in full bloom. It's looking like Spring out there already!

We desperately need more rain, but it sure was nice to ride in beautiful weather today. Here’s hoping for another nice day tomorrow, then it can start raining Tuesday. That’s fair, right?

Oh, the highlight of my ride today … I passed one of the DBC Race Team dudes.

OK, so it was at a traffic light and it changed right before I got there, but, I rarely have the opportunity to pass the “real” cyclists, so it’s always a little fun when I get to. Sometimes it really is nice to be so easily amused.

I do hope to get lots of training rides in over the next few months because the 2014 Napa Valley Tour de Cure will be here before you know it!
